The Hope Team reaches out to troubled youth at the Oklahoma County Juvenile Detention Center located at 5905 N. Classen Blvd. Volunteers provide faith-based hope and encouragement through their presence at the Center utilizing various approaches to interact with juvenile offenders. As an example, a volunteer might lead a bible study, conduct a discussion group, teach character training or life skills, mentor in a group, provide parties for special occasions, or teach a hobby oriented program such as art, crafts, photography, cooking, music appreciation, etc. The kids are very well-behaved and appreciative when someone comes to spend time with them whether it is an hour once a month or once a week. This is an environment where you can feel free to share your faith and pray with and for the kids. Please see the Detention Center website for more information.
Other volunteer opportunities for working with juvenile offenders are also available through the John Wesley Charter School and the Juvenile Offender Ministry, both of which are sponsored through the Oklahoma United Methodist Conference. For more information visit the Conference website at Criminal Justice and Mercy Ministries or contact Lesa Stiger or David Johnson to get signed up!

A new program "Survival Skills for Young Women" is facilitated through the Oklahoma County Juvenile Justice Center in an evening classroom format. Classes are available on the North and South side of Oklahoma City to help teenage girls become strong, smart, and independent young women. Volunteers teach the one and a half hour classes twice a week for six weeks. Each class is over different subject material and most volunteers are committed for only one evening every six weeks. It is a great way to help make a difference without a huge time committment. Please see the Survival Skills website for more information.
